Vodafone: Telecommunication Giant

Vodafone Group Plc, the popular British multinational mobile network carrier is the world's largest mobile network operator based on revenue. With over 427 million subscribers across 31 markets, it has obtained an estimated market profit of about 71.2 billion GBP back in November 2009. Currently, the company operates in 31 countries with partner networks in 40 more countries.

Its 45% share of Verizon Wireless has no doubt added to its international success. The United States-based Verizon has ranked as the largest wireless telecommunications operator based on the local subscriber count. To sustain its service, Vodafone has more than 79,000 employees across the globe.

Voice Data Phone

The name of the company is actually an abbreviated version of the phrase "voice data fone" which was chosen in order to emphasize the kind of services rendered by the telecommunications company. To be more specific, it is to "reflect the provision of voice and data services over mobile phones".

The plain black version of the logo that used to serve as the company identity was changed back in 1997. Called the "Speech Mark" design, it sports a circle containing a quotation mark inside. It symbolizes conversation, much like the speech bubble used in various comic strips. This supports the company's services which connect people wirelessly across the globe.

A Short History

Originally formed in the year 1984, the Group started as a subsidiary of Racal Telecom Limited (known as Racal Electronics Plc until the company went defunct in the year 2000). The company finally went independent after it was demerged from the Racal Electronics Plc in the month of September, 1991. The carrier went through a name change to signify their full independence and was referred to as Vodafone Group Plc.

After being merged with the AirTouch Communications, Inc (or simply AirTouch) the carrier changed their name again, this time into "Vodafone AirTouch Plc" in the 29th of June in the year 1999.

Finally, after a decision made in a General Meeting, the shareholders decided to revert back to the company's original name of Vodafone Group Plc, and it has been retained as the company name since then.

Consumerism and its effect on the Environment

Vodafone aims to get recognition as a "green brand" that is able to not only reduce the amount of waste generated inside the company but also the waste generated by their customers. The goal is to get at least 75% of their long-standing markets to meet the environmental waste reduction requirements by the year 2010.

Although the company does not have direct control to what their clients do with their products, the company seeks to encourage their subscribers to prolong the life of their mobile phones and to reduce the energy wasted during its operations.

The Mobile Take Back recycling program help keep functional devices in the loop by being refurbished for use of other subscribers in the event that it is surrendered or exchanged. Incentives are offered by the company to those who prolong the use of their existing phones as well.
