How do I get cell phones in South Africa?

I need to call a US cell phone from South Africa. Can someone please give me the exact dialling code to use?
Ok, I know the international code for the US is +1, but do I still have to include the area code (in this case, 562 for Los Angeles) for a call to a cellphone, or are area codes only for landlines?
The cellphone number has 10 digits, so what is the whole thing supposed to look like with all the codes and everything?
eg: +1562XXXXXXXXXX ?
or: +1XXXXXXXXXX?
Or maybe some other thing I haven't thought of?
Thanks guys.
Yes, you must use the country code and then the area code.
+1XXXXXXXXXX
And you can substitute 00 for the +.

Why not just take your phone and buy a sim card they are really cheap or even a starter pack from one of the service providers. I’m sure that would be cheaper than renting, unless your phone is locked…
Ask how much they cost in the SA travel section on here.
I wouldn’t recommend renting one at the airport because criminals have, unfortunately, been known to target people who do that.
