How to watch movies on my Cell phone? Please help!?

I just purchased the HTC Droid & I want to convert a few DVDs so I can watch them on my phone. The problem is that I don't know the first thing about doing it. What format will I need to convert the DVD to (divx)? And what is a good program that has detailed instructions on how to do it? I know there are free program downloads, but I don't want to risk getting a virus or something that doesn't work. I don't mind paying for it. Any & all information is appreciated. Please give detailed answers if you don't mind.
